The American University of Madaba (AUM) is committed to fostering creativity, innovation, and the protection of intellectual property within its academic community. This policy establishes principles and guidelines to govern the ownership, use, and dissemination of intellectual property created by faculty, staff, students, and collaborators.

AUM prioritizes respecting creators' rights while promoting the open exchange of ideas. This policy ensures a balanced approach that encourages innovation, supports scholarly and creative activities, and provides equitable access to intellectual property benefits, aligning with legal and ethical standards.

  • Purpose:
    • The purpose of this policy is to:
      • Define a clear and equitable framework for managing intellectual property ownership, use, and dissemination within the university.
      • Encourage creativity and innovation while protecting creators' rights.
      • Promote a collaborative environment for research, scholarship, and creative expression.
      • Align with legal and ethical standards to support fair and transparent intellectual property practices.
  • Scope:
    • This policy applies to all members of the AUM community, including faculty, staff, students, and collaborators involved in creating intellectual property. It covers:
      • Copyrightable works, inventions, patents, trademarks, and other forms of creative expression or innovation.
      • Intellectual property created independently, collaboratively, or within the context of academic and research activities.
      • Ownership, licensing, and dissemination of intellectual property.
    • This comprehensive scope ensures fairness, transparency, and compliance with legal standards while fostering a culture of innovation and responsible stewardship.
  • Procedures:
    • Ownership of Course Materials:
      • AUM owns the copyright for instructional materials produced by faculty members as part of their assigned teaching duties. This includes multimedia, web-based courses, presentations, and study materials.
      • Materials created as part of general employment duties are considered university property. Additional rewards may be granted at the university's discretion.
      • AUM retains the right to reproduce, modify, distribute, and archive course materials.
      • Faculty must ensure their materials comply with copyright and legal standards to prevent breaches or infringements.
  • Copyright for Research Work and Projects:
    • Faculty and student work published in journals must acknowledge AUM as the affiliated institution.
    • Authors retain proprietary rights for works created through individual initiative, unless developed under specific assignments, in which case copyright agreements will be explicitly defined.
    • Commercialized works may result in royalty payments based on agreed terms.
    • Sponsored research must comply with sponsor regulations and mutual agreements on copyrightable materials.
  • Use of AUM Logo:
    • The AUM logo is a registered trademark, and its use is governed by strict guidelines:
      • Written approval is required for any logo usage.
      • The logo must not be used in ways that harm AUM's reputation or imply unauthorized endorsement.
      • The logo must not be altered, combined with other elements, or used on inappropriate backgrounds.
      • The logo must not be associated with illegal, defamatory, or objectionable activities.
    • Any violations may result in disciplinary actions or legal claims by the university.
  • Key Guidelines for Logo Usage:
    • The logo must remain unaltered in design, color, and scale.
    • Minimum height for reproduction: 1 inch.
    • Placement must ensure sufficient spacing from other elements.
    • Proper attribution must be included (e.g., "AUM logo is a registered trademark of the university").
  • The Marketing and Media Office is the official entity for providing and managing logo use.

Commercialization of research output

Policy Statement:

  • The Commercialization of Research Output Policy at AUM aims to foster innovation and economic impact by strategically transferring intellectual property from academic research to the marketplace. This policy encourages collaboration between researchers, industry partners, and entrepreneurs to transform groundbreaking discoveries into practical applications, benefiting society while adhering to fair and responsible commercialization practices.

Purpose:

This policy establishes a structured framework to:

  • Facilitate the seamless transition of academic research outcomes to real-world applications.
  • Promote innovation and enhance collaboration with industry stakeholders.
  • Foster a culture of entrepreneurship and maximize the societal impact of university research.

Scope:

This policy applies to all research activities conducted at AUM and addresses the:

  • Identification, protection, marketing, and licensing of intellectual property (IP).
  • Mechanisms for collaboration with external partners and the establishment of spin-off ventures.
  • Ethical considerations, confidentiality, and revenue-sharing models.
  • Faculty, researchers, students, and staff involved in research activities.

Definitions:

Research Output:

  • Includes but is not limited to: inventions, discoveries, innovations, software, databases, biological materials, and other forms of intellectual property resulting from research activities.

Procedures:

Faculty Responsibilities:

  • Maintain an active research agenda that prioritizes quality, student involvement, international collaborations, and peer-reviewed publications.
  • Seek external funding to support research activities.

Research Expectations:

  • Faculty publishing in English must target at least 25% of papers in Q1/Q2 journals or Clarivate Analytics journals with an impact factor ≥ 1.
  • Faculty publishing in Arabic must achieve at least 50% of papers indexed in Scopus or Clarivate Analytics.
  • AUM aims to publish 200 research articles indexed in Scopus within five years.

Research Appointment Criteria:

  • Recruit scholars from the top 400 QS universities with excellent research profiles.

Faculty Performance Evaluations:

  • Faculty with PhDs must publish at least one Scopus-indexed article annually and participate in regional or international conferences.

Research Copyrights and IP Rights:

  • Copyright is governed by Jordanian Copyright Law No. 22 (1992) and amendments.
  • Faculty retains IP rights unless created under specific assignments, where AUM holds copyright ownership.

Research Management:

  • The AUM Research Committee, chaired by the Dean of Research and Graduate Studies, oversees research policy, strategies, and grant administration.

Commercialization Strategies:

  • Licensing:
    • The Deanship of Scientific Research and Graduate Studies identifies licensing opportunities and negotiates agreements to ensure equitable terms.

  • Start-up Ventures:
    • Researchers are encouraged to establish start-ups to commercialize their research, with support for mentorship and resources.

  • Industry Collaborations:
    • AUM facilitates partnerships with industry for joint R&D projects, ensuring mutual benefits and IP protection.

Revenue Sharing:

  • Revenues from commercialized research output will be shared transparently between the university and researchers based on a pre-determined model.

Ethical Considerations:
