This laboratory course is focusing on the laboratory methods, diagnostic features and clinical specimens used for identifying the clinically important parasites and fungi. Using prepared slides and clinical specimens, the students will examine and identify the parasites or fungi when present. The lab course will help to identify and differentiate between various stages (egg, trophozoite, cyst, larval and adult worm segments). Moreover, it focuses on specimen collection management, smear examination, microscopic examination of fecal specimens by concentration (sedimentation) method, staining procedure for the detection of intestinal or blood parasites. On the other hand, the student will gain the basic laboratory techniques used in the diagnosis of fungal infection that include; specimen preparation for processing, direct microscopic examination, types of media used in the primary isolation of fungi, culture techniques, macro and microscopic examination of cultures and selected tests and stains used in the identification.
