This course entails two parts, the first focuses on the medically important parasites, regarding their morphology, general structure and differential characters, life cycle (diagnostic and infective stage), pathogenesis and epidemiology. Moreover, laboratory diagnosis of parasitic infections (current and new diagnostic techniques), preventive and control measures. The second part will introduce the student to medically important fungi by covering the following topics; taxonomy and nomenclature, basic fungal cell structure, primary and opportunistic fungal pathogens and mechanisms of pathogenesis. Furthermore, the course covers the laboratory diagnostic methods in medical mycology including morphologic, genetic and non- culture methods.
